OPERATING PRINCIPLE:Variable-area flow meters, often called rotameters, consist essentially of a tapered tube, a float and scaled indicator as you see in the figure below. Although classified as differential pressure units, they are, in reality, constant differential pressure devices. Flanged-end or screwed-end fittings provide an easy means for installing them in pipes. When there is no flow, the float rests freely at the bottom of the tube. As the fluid enters the bottom of the tube, the float begins to rise. The float material is selected so as to have a density higher than that of the fluid and the position of the float varies directly with the flow rate. Its exact position is at the point where the differential pressure between the upper and the lower surfaces balance the weight of the float.

Rotameters can be configured to either measure liquid or gas flow. Measuring the flow of liquids and gases is a critical need in many industrial plants. In some operations, the ability to conduct accurate flow measurements is so important that it can make the difference between making a profit and taking a loss. In other cases, inaccurate flow measurements or failure to take measurements can cause serious (or even disastrous) results. The media is most likely liquid, gas, or steam. It is important to understand the nature of the fluid, such as its corrosive properties, concentration, presence of entrained solids, and the density and viscosity of the fluid in the system.

Mounting Options Rotameters should always be mounted vertically and with the widest end of the taper at the top. Mounting options for rotameters include insertion types, in-line flanged, in-line threaded, and in-line clamp.
• Insertion flow meters are inserted perpendicular to flow path. They usually require a threaded hole in the process pipe or other means of access.
• In-line flanged flow meters are inserted parallel to the flow path between two pieces of existing flanged process pipes.
• In-line threaded flow meters are inserted parallel to the flow path and threaded into two existing process pipes. NPT is the most common thread type.

These come in glass tube and acrylic body tube designs. These operate according to the variable area principle. The fluid flowing from bottom to top allows the float to freely glide up and down the tapered Acrylic Body Tube OR Glass Tube. The float is placed in a position where the weight of the float and the buoyancy forces are proportionately balanced. The measure of the instantaneous flow rate is the vertical position of the float as shown by the scale.
